The following are descriptions of the drills that Hedley Elementary will have during the school year.
Fire Drill
A fire drill is a practice exercise designed to prepare students, staff, and visitors to safely evacuate the building in the event of a fire or suspected fire. Participants follow designated evacuation routes, exit the building in an orderly manner, report to assigned assembly areas, and remain there until accountability is completed and an all-clear is given. All students will be escorted by staff to the football field where your Raptor attendance will be taken.

Lockout Drill
A lockout drill is a practice exercise used when a potential threat or safety concern exists outside the school building. The purpose is to secure the school from outside access while allowing normal activities inside the building to continue when appropriate. Exterior doors are secured, outside activities are brought indoors, and access to the building is controlled until the situation is resolved and an all-clear is given.
Lockout drill: Keep the threat out of the building.
Lockdown Drill
A lockdown drill is a practice exercise designed to prepare students, staff, and visitors to respond to a serious or imminent threat inside or near the school. During a lockdown, individuals move to a secure location, doors are secured, lights may be turned off, and occupants remain quiet and out of sight. Everyone remains in place until authorized school officials provide an all-clear.
Lockdown drill: Secure the area, stay out of sight, and remain in place until the all-clear.
Hold Drill
A hold drill is a practice exercise designed to prepare students, staff, and visitors to remain in their current location and keep hallways clear during a situation that temporarily requires movement throughout the school to stop. During a hold, classrooms and other areas are secured as directed, students and staff remain in place, and normal activities may continue when appropriate. Everyone remains in place until school officials provide an all-clear.

Evacuation Drill
An evacuation drill is a practice exercise designed to prepare students, staff, and visitors to safely and orderly leave a building or designated area when an emergency requires evacuation. Participants follow established evacuation routes, proceed to designated assembly areas, and remain there while staff account for everyone. The drill concludes when school officials provide an all-clear. Students and staff will board a bus at the back of the cafeteria and be transported (walk if safe to do so) to a reunification area, First Baptist Church.

Shelter-in-Place Drill
A shelter-in-place drill is a practice exercise designed to prepare students, staff, and visitors to remain safely inside the building during an external environmental or community hazard. Participants move to designated areas as directed, remain indoors, and follow instructions regarding doors, windows, ventilation, and other protective measures. Everyone remains in place until school officials provide an all-clear.
Shelter-in-place drill: Stay inside, move to a designated safe area, and remain there until the all-clear.
Shelter-in-Place Drill for Severe Weather
A severe weather shelter-in-place drill is a practice exercise designed to prepare students, staff, and visitors to move to designated safe areas inside the school or storm shelter during severe weather, such as tornadoes, high winds, or other dangerous conditions. Participants move away from windows and exterior doors, take shelter in designated interior areas, and follow school emergency procedures until the threat has passed and an all-clear is given.
Severe weather shelter drill: Move indoors to a designated safe area, stay away from windows, and remain there until the all-clear.
